This is a little bit of a preparatory episode to set the stage for the guest appearance of Rob Caskie, who is currently recognized as one of the leading experts on the Anglo/Zulu War, in particular the two battles of Isandlwana and Rourkes Drift. Rob is also one of South Africa’s premier Anglo/Zulu War battlefield guides, and a speaker and storyteller of international acclaim.
I’ll be chatting to Rob about some of the facts surrounding the war that broke the back of the Zulu nation, and confirmed British predominance in what was then the colony of Natal.
In this episode we cover briefly the emergence of the Zulu as a military power, touching also on some of the offshoots and subgroups of the Zulu. As this series progresses we will add detail and dwell on one or two specific episodes, and I hope Rob will join us again to shed some light on a few of these.
